What is Classical Music? The Classical Period Explained. During the Classical period (roughly 1750-1820), traditional practices were codified and new forms of musical composition were developed. Most notably, a focus on melody defined the classical period and distinguished it from the complicated counterpoint of the Baroque era.Via the Roman Empire, Greek culture came to be foundational to Western culture in general.
